GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under direct supervision of the Customer Service/Circulation Supervisor, the Shelving Clerk accurately sorts and shelves library materials of all types. Ensures library materials are placed in assigned places and in proper order while consistently delivering caring, non-judgmental customer service to all.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Sorts and shelves library materials of all types.
  • Maintains proper order of materials by adhering to established organizational systems.
  • Works collaboratively with Branch Manager and Customer Service/Circulation Supervisor to merchandise collections.
  • Works with Branch Manager and Customer Service/Circulation Supervisor to implement branch goals within overall system goals.
  • Straightens library furniture and ensures shelved materials are neat and orderly.
  • Locates and pulls materials to fill patron and staff requests.
  • Assists with clerical aspects of special projects.
  • Makes recommendations to Branch Manager and Customer Service/Circulation Supervisor with regard to collection.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or G.E.D.
  • Knowledge of the alphabet and number order.
  • Ability to learn the Dewey Decimal system.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Ability to effectively and creatively solve problems.
  • Ability to follow directions, remain organized, and pay attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Ability to reach, bend, and lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to push/pull book cart and move books individually from cart to shelves.
  • Ability to push/pull a depressible book truck weighing up to 245 lbs full.

EQUIPMENT: Computer, book carts

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works in normal heat and light conditions with some exposure to seasonal draft conditions. Some eye fatigue from shelf reading; some physical fatigue from repetitive lifting of books and pushing carts. Some stress from constant public contact.

FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT: Non-Exempt

SCHEDULE/HOURS:

25 hours per week. Regular schedule includes day and/or evening hours.
