Position Summary:

Provides advanced nursing care to patients in a clinical setting in an area of specialization under the direction of a physician.

The Obstetric Anesthesia Nurse Practitioner (NP) will work collaboratively with the obstetric anesthesia team to optimize perioperative care for parturient. This role will include direct patient care, coordination of anesthesia services, and interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance patient safety and outcomes.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Performs relevant patient assessments and physical examinations.
    2.  Coordinates, directs, and implements patient’s plan of care.
    3.  Orders, conducts, and interprets pertinent laboratory and diagnostic studies and procedures.
    4.  Makes medical recommendations and/or referrals.
    5.  Formulates, implements, and evaluates an outcome-based treatment plan.
    6.  Maintains appropriate records detailing the patient’s treatment plans and outcomes.
    7.  Facilitates patient education relating to medical processes, medication, nutrition, and health promotion.
    8.  Collaborates with patients, families, other clinicians, and referral services to assist in the patient’s recovery.
    9.  Other duties as assigned.

A. Preoperative Responsibilities:

1.      Conduct comprehensive patient histories and physical examinations, as well as facilitate pre-anesthetic evaluations for all parturient admitted on Labor and Delivery (in antepartum or on labor)

2.      Order and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests as appropriate

3.      Assist in formulating individualized anesthetic plans in collaboration with the anesthesia team

4.      Obtain and document informed anesthesia consent from patients in compliance with hospital policies and state regulations

5.      Collaborate with the Peri-anesthesia Clinic staff to schedule, assess, optimize, and coordinate patient care in the preoperative anesthesia clinic where patients scheduled for cesarean deliveries will be seen prior to their surgery dates.

6.      Act as a clinical nursing resource and interprofessional consultant to ensure seamless patient flow and care coordination

7.      Provide education to patients, families, and caregivers regarding anesthetic procedures, expectations, and recovery

8.      Help with IV placements and blood draws for patients who are difficult IV accesses

B. Postoperative Responsibilities:

1.      Assist in post-anesthesia evaluations and patient monitoring after delivery

2.      Conduct post-anesthetic follow-ups to assess outcomes and address any anesthesia-related concerns 

C. Additional Responsibilities:

1.      Serve as a patient advocate, ensuring safe, effective, and patient-centered anesthesia care

2.      Participate in quality improvement initiatives, evidence-based practice updates, and interdisciplinary meetings related to obstetric anesthesia services

This position requires a high level of collaboration with anesthesiologists, obstetricians, nursing, and other healthcare providers to ensure optimal perioperative care for obstetric patients.


Certification/Skills:

Current Texas Licensure as a Registered Nurse
Current Texas Licensure as an APRN-NP, and specialty certification as required by department
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified

Minimum Education:

Masters in Nursing as NP or Masters degree in Nursing with completion of a post-masters Nurse Practitioner Certification Program.

Minimum Experience:

None required.

Preferred: Minimum 3 years of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse, preferably in Labor & Delivery, perioperative, or anesthesia-related setting 

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
