The Area Safety Professional plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our coworkers and contractors, as well as the compliance with safety regulations and company policies. Reporting to the Director of Safety, the Area Safety Professional is required to collaborate with many operational workgroups within the assigned Region.  The Area Safety Professional is responsible for providing support and guidance for the assigned area of responsibility to ensure that the Company’s objectives are achieved in the areas of health and safety. This includes, providing guidance and assistance, to all levels of management, safety personnel and Coworkers in their efforts to reduce the frequency and severity of personal injuries, motor vehicle accidents, and property damage losses.  The position plans, develops, implements, and monitors programs to ensure compliance with Company policies and procedures and all local, state, and federal regulations.  The position will also support Human Resource activities as needed.

Essential Functions

  • Behavior-Based Safety
    • Champion and promote behavior-based safety practices throughout the organization.
    • Encourage coworkers and contractors to identify and report unsafe behaviors or conditions.
    • Collaborate with teams to develop and implement behavior-based safety observation programs.
    • Analyze behavior-based safety data to identify trends and patterns for intervention.
  • Coworker Engagement
    • Facilitate team-based safety meetings and initiatives.
    • Encourage cross-functional collaboration to address safety concerns and improvements.
    • Engage teams in safety planning, hazard identification, and safety goal setting.
    • Recognize and reward teams for safety achievements and contributions.
    • Promote a culture of safety excellence through effective communication, engagement, and awareness campaigns.
    • Collaborate with management to set and achieve safety goals and targets.
    • Participate in safety committees and initiatives.
  • Safety Commitment
    • Ensure that all safety regulations, policies, and procedures are followed by coworkers and contractors.
    • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify potential hazards and areas for improvement.
    • Collaborate with relevant teams to develop and implement safety plans and programs.
    • On a frequent basis, perform inspections of records, equipment, and facilities to promote compliance with safety regulations and recordkeeping requirements as established by the Company and/or local, state, or federal laws and conduct follow up sessions with leadership to address findings.
    • Conduct MSHA - Part 46 and required OSHA training at assigned plants, quarries, and jobsites.
    • On a monthly basis, lead assigned local quarry, mine and plant safety audits, track results, provide local leadership with continuous improvement options and follow up on all action items.
    • Lead and/or review all local property damage analysis.
    • Lead or provide direction to all assigned locations on incident investigation.
    • Mentor and coach all facility safety partners.
    • Complete all safety center administration on observations, safety related incidents and identification or possible losses; evaluating the risk in such loss exposure, developing, or implementing a plan to correct or prevent a loss and audit the plan to ensure its effectiveness for all assigned locations.
    • Analyze data from safety programs for trends and opportunities for improvement, recommends strategies for reduction in trends.
    • Monthly, provide leadership an update on safety audits, observations and near misses with follow up on all open action items.
    • Participate in MSHA activities at assigned locations.
    • Assist in the development of annual refresher training and participate in the training process.
    • Participate in the annual review of MSHA - Part 46 and OSHA training plans and ensure compliance with applicable MSHA and OSHA regulations.
    • Coordinate Industrial Hygiene assessments and training for all locations.
    • Manages third-party safety and health services, such as hearing tests, occupational health sampling, and specialized training. 
    • Establish and maintain a line of communication with operations management, customer vendors, professional organizations, and applicable government agencies.
    • Assist in identification, analysis and control of occupational hazards requiring the application of hazard resolution.
    • Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems.
    • Ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures.
    • Perform other incidental and related duties as required and assigned by the Regional Safety Manager.
    • Maintains complete and accurate regulatory and departmental safety and health records.
  • Training and Education
    • Organize and deliver safety training programs and orientations for coworkers and contractors.
    • Maintain records of training and certifications to ensure compliance.
    • Provide guidance and resources to employees on safety best practices.
  • Incident Investigation
    • Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses, and safety concerns.
    • Compile and analyze incident data to identify trends and implement preventive measures.
    • Prepare reports on incidents, root causes, and recommended corrective actions.
    • Develop methodologies for rigorous root cause analysis to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Emergency Response
    • Develop and maintain emergency response plans and procedures.
    • Coordinate drills and exercises to test and improve the effectiveness of emergency response measures.
    • Ensure the availability and proper functioning of safety equipment and resources.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or a related technical program with a focus on safety.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in mine or construction safety (or similar field), to include training standards and practices.
  • Minimum of 2 years in a progressive leadership role required, with exposure to overseeing multiple locations preferred.
  • ASP, CSP or CMSP certification highly desired.
  • Proven experience in safety management, preferably in the construction materials industry.
  • Knowledge and applied experience of federal, state, and local safety regulations (e.g., MSHA, OSHA).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to conduct training and presentations effectively.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong presentation skills for formal meetings.
  • Must be highly organized and capable of handling multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Must be able to respond to emergencies after scheduled work hours and during weekends.
  • Must be able to travel to multiple sites and projects throughout the assigned area of coverage.  Must be able to travel overnight.  80% travel is typical for this position.  Must be able to work nights when necessary to support nighttime operations.
  • Valid driver’s license and compliant with NESL Driving Standards.
