At a Glance

Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer to join the Team in New London, CT. The Successful candidate is responsible for the design of new product electro-mechanical components and assemblies, including product test validation. Works individually or as part of a design team to develop, evaluate and validate product designs and specifications. Conducts design reviews, validates and approves documentation packages, preproduction builds and production transfer.

What Will You Do?

MAIN JOB DUTIES:
  • Provides direction and project management for electro-mechanical design and test validation efforts. Works with Product Marketing, Manufacturing and other Engineering personnel during product conceptualization phases and throughout the project phases.
  • Works closely with Project Management to schedule, track and maintain up-to-date project schedules and milestone due-date requirements.
  • Provides maintenance of existing mechanical products and documentation (design improvements, VAVE cost savings etc.) and product databases through the engineering change process.
  • Designs and develops electro-mechanical systems and customized solutions, utilizing many methods such as injection molding, metal forming, casting and extrusion processes.
  • Utilizes 2D and 3D SolidWorks CAD systems to perform detailed design analysis, including kinematic and kinetic, structural, thermal and finite element analysis methods.
  • Provides mechanical materials and tooling DFMA cost studies. Works with appropriate vendors to develop cost effective realization of design.
  • Works with Product Management to develop technical product requirements specifications and quality assurance protocols.
  • Initiates, leads, and participates in cross-functional electro-mechanical design reviews with other engineering, manufacturing and marketing personnel.
  • Coordinates rapid-prototype validation requirements with internal tooling manager and outside design supplier.
  • Provides detailed test report summaries for all product test validation requirements.
  • Provides mentor guidance and support to engineering team members across disciplines.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required.
  • Qualifications


    Required Skills

    • BS in Mechanical Engineering.
    • 5+ years product engineering experience.
    • 4+ years design experience in mechanical design and/or electro-mechanical systems.
    • 2+ years' experience with SolidWorks 2D/3D modeling software
    • 2+ years project management skills and experience

    Preferred Skills:

    • SolidWorks Professional Mechanical Design Certification
    • Experience with device-level physical packaging & production processes
      • Materials design (Plastic, metals, composites)
    • Knowledge and/or experience with product engineering requirements
      • Metric design techniques
      • Tolerance stack-up analysis
    • Knowledge in product production (prototype to production transition, production test plan, DFMA)
    • Knowledge in product quality and reliability (environmental test, stress test etc)
      • General knowledge in product safety, sustainability, and other regulatory requirements (UL, CE, RoHS
    • Strong computer skills, proficient with Microsoft Office word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and data base software, e-mail and meeting management software.
    • Ability to use internet and web based resources efficiently and effectively.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills, close attention to detail and be-able-to effectively handle multiple priorities.
    • Possess excellent project management skills, including demonstrated ability to develop and manage to a project plan, establish priorities, work to deadlines and control a-number-of projects at various stages of work.
    • Excellent verbal and written communications skills and be-able-to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.
    • Effective listener, able to extract necessary information and validate understanding of the information.
    • Strong scientific analytical skills and proven ability to efficiently research and summarize information in an effective manner and make recommendations based upon analysis.
    • Highly collaborative and able to work in a team based environment. Fosters open communication and support an environment of innovation and creative change.
    • Be willing to travel as necessary.
