Job Description

Job Title: Head Press Operator

 

Position Summary: Directs the daily operation of a web offset press to manufacture printed materials according to written specifications and SOPs by performing the following duties. Leads a press crew.

 

Key Duties / Responsibilities:

 

  • Press Crew Leadership/Training  - 40%

    • Organizes crew activities and delegates assignments.  Periodically performs assigned duties.

    • Trains and develops all crew members.

    • Completes and/or assists Pressroom Supervisor with performance evaluations as needed.

    • Leads Press PMs and ensures all team members complete daily / weekly / monthly PM lists

       

  • Communication/Record Keeping – 20%

    • Maintains accurate record keeping, press time sheets and other logs or forms.

    • Communicates personnel issues to the Pressroom Supervisor.

    • Informs other Head Press Operators/Supervisors and press crews of pertinent information and communicates to other departments as necessary.

 

  • Production and Waste – 20%

    • Completes all work assignments during make-readies and other press downtime situations.

    • Monitors product waste.

    • Manages and assists in the webbing up of the printing press.

    • Replaces worn or damaged disposable parts.

    • Assists with all set up job requirements and ensures ahead of time all required job information is at press befor make ready begins.

       

  • Print Quality – 20%

    • Monitors product quality for color, register, special applications and sample requirements and readjusts guides and controls to rectify errors.  Achieves acceptable color match to all supplied color proofs.

    • Adjusts folder controls to properly maintain accurate fold on PFF-3 Folders

    • Adjusts cutter to properly maintain an accurate and consistent cut.

    • Adjusts slitters and / or Headtrimmers to maintain accurate product size.

 

 

Qualifications

Education & Knowledge:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

  • Prefer completion of designated Press Operator 5 training levels and time spent in HPO1 move up role. 

 

Experience / Skills / Abilities:

  • Language Skills - Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

  •  Mathematical Skills - Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and able to discern KPI and other pressroom reports.

  • Computer Skills - To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of manufacturing software; Excel Spreadsheet software and Microsoft Word Processing software.

  • Reasoning Ability - Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • Essential Skills, Abilities and Qualifications - Must have completed designated training program and have four years of press-related experience.  Good mechanical ability.  Must be able to work on a team with minimal supervision.  Must not be afraid to get dirty due to heavy clean-up.  Ability to train, evaluate performance and lead a press crew.  Ability to work a 12-hour X & O shift with overtime requirements.

  • Informs Pressroom Supervisor or Manager and press team of pertinent information and communicates to other departments as necessary.

 

 

Decision Making Scope:

  • Makes decisions around when to shut printing press down for adjustments, makereadies, etc,,, Responsible for pulling customer quality samples.

Additional Information

Hourly Pay Rate: $28.35 - $31.40

The ultimate compensation offered for the position will depend upon several factors such as skill level, cost of living, experience, and responsibilities.
