DEPARTMENT SUMMARY
The USF Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS), is one of the world’s largest freestanding medical simulation facilities dedicated to training health care professionals at the local, national, and international levels. Through the use of simulation-based education and evidence-based best practices, CAMLS strives to educate students, train faculty, and prepare health care professionals to acquire, maintain, and enhance their clinical practice and interprofessional skills to improve overall patient safety and quality of care. CAMLS’ programs integrate best practices for team-based training and interprofessional education through close collaboration with faculty and researchers at the University of South Florida. As a direct support organization to USF and non-profit, CAMLS provides national curriculum courses and custom training programs to students and healthcare teams located within our community and around the world. Our 90,000 ft2 state-of-the-art healthcare simulation center includes robust capabilities for simulation education and medical research including on-site cadaveric tissue, a fleet of advanced human simulation manikins and task trainers, over 200 standardized participants, 36 surgical skills stations, 18 outpatient clinical exam rooms, 5 inpatient hospital team training rooms, and an 11,659 ft2 vivarium facility. CAMLS is also actively exploring research to advance the science of healthcare education and improve patient safety and quality by leveraging strong relationships with industry partners specializing in virtual, augmented, and extended realities.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The USF Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) is seeking candidates for tenured or tenure-track position at all ranks to expand research supporting CAMLS’ mission to create and provide experiential learning that improves clinical skills and patient care in our community and around the globe. We seek a curious and creative researcher to help our team achieve this ambitious vision through critical investigation and evaluation of educational best practices and cutting-edge simulation technologies. This position will collaborate with others to support ongoing innovative projects and develop new research areas in the interdisciplinary field of healthcare simulation, including areas such as virtual and augmented realities, human-computer interaction, applied or cognitive psychology, education/training, human factors, and/or psychometrics and quantitative psychology.
Successful candidates for this position are expected to have already established, or have the potential to establish, a nationally recognized, competitively funded research program. CAMLS is uniquely situated to support interdisciplinary research collaborations among academia, government, and industry with the potential to immediately apply and disseminate transformative findings in our training programs to healthcare teams around the world. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to make long-lasting contributions to the field and will collaborate with an interprofessional team of leading scholars, educators, and clinical professionals.
This position is housed in the USF Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS), located in the vibrant downtown Tampa Water Street medical technology corridor. The academic home department will be appropriate to the applicant’s background. Successful candidates will be offered institutional salary support commensurate with experience and highly competitive start-up packages that promote success.
DUTIES:
80% Research
- Provide leadership in determining the long-term vision of CAMLS’ research program
- Coordinate and conduct applied and translational research
- Plan new simulation studies; write research IRB protocols; and grant proposals and applications
- Analyze data derived from research and interpret results
- Participate in the Center's educational programs
- Publish in peer-review journals and present research at appropriate external scientific conferences
10% Teaching
- Provide didactic and center-based lectures for undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, IPE simulation fellows, and residents as appropriate. Provide Departmental or college-wide seminars.
10 % Administrative
- Serve in governance, service, and community outreach tasks.
QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience):
Minimum Qualifications:
Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor.
PhD in computer science, engineering, applied or cognitive psychology, education, human factors, human-computer interaction, and/or psychometrics and quantitative psychology or related fields
Experience in developing and implementing research projects within government, academic and/or industrial organizations
Knowledge of human subject ethics and experience writing Institutional Review Board (IRB) research protocols
Ability to lead and manage data collection in a variety of settings with diverse populations
Strong written and oral communication skills
Grant writing experience (please specify types of grant/agency)
Research project management experience (budgeting, timelines, etc.)
Self-starter mentality supported by evidence of success under minimal external direction or supervision
Evidence of collaborative research skills (communication, team building, conflict resolution etc.)
Experience adopting new technologies and techniques
Preferred Qualifications:
Peer-reviewed journal publications
Scientific/academic presentations
Substantial grant portfolio, Federal Grants
Experience in medical or clinical research
High aptitude for new technology / Experience with virtual reality, augmented reality, or mixed reality technology
Strong experience in working with federal agencies, particularly in research and development
Experience visualizing/presenting data for stakeholders
Experience with task simulations for motor skill development or team training
