Job Description:
The Test Engineer’s primary role is to assist in the transition of new products from R&D to production. This position reports to the Commercialization Manager. The main activities of the role will involve but will not be limited to the following:
- Actively participating on multiple new product teams to integrate test ideologies and methods into new product designs
- Designs, procures, assembles, qualifies, and document test stations for new products.
- Understand the fundamental principles of multiple technologies on various platforms
- Implement statistical process controls and identify the root cause of assembly issues
- Assist in creating and maintaining BOMs, MPIs, and routings
- Design and document assembly processes and tooling
- Develop training and troubleshooting materials for use in operator/technician development
- Transfer product assembly to low-cost regions
- Writing engineering change notices
- Be a strong team player who is willing to respectfully critique others work and accept criticism of one’s own designs and processes
- Be a hands-on engineer who is well versed in electrical circuits, PCB/PCA design, assembly and troubleshooting, and in electrical circuit design tools
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Hardware, system, and software testing
- Oversee compliance testing
- Develop test procedures and test fixtures (may include automated testing)
- Implementation of new products into the production assembly
- Evaluation and improvement existing manufacturing processes
- Troubleshooting manufacturing issues, working with R&D when necessary, and drive route-cause error resolution
- Improve skills through self-study and/or short course attendance
Approximate work breakdown:
- 40% Developing test procedures, test fixtures, and troubleshooting electronic assemblies
- 20% System level testing and software testing
- 10% Compliance testing
- 10% Create Engineering Change Orders
- 10% Participate in new product specifications for Design for Test
- 10% Training manufacturing
Supervisory Responsibilities
- This position has no direct reports, but this person will be expected to lead manufacturing improvement projects and to mentor other engineering staff.
Education and/or Experience
- Minimum Bachelor's degree (BS), Masters degree (MS) preferred from an accredited four-year program in Electrical Engineering
- Minimum of 1-5 years, 5-10 years preferred of hands on experience with increasing responsibility and a demonstrated ability to design, document, implement, and improve new/existing test systems.
Technical Knowledge
- Proficiency with various word processing, analytical, database, and presentation software to include, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Basic knowledge of electronics test equipment such as Oscilloscopes, Digital Voltage Meters, Signal Generators, etc.
Preferred Skills
- Fluent in Lab View and National Instruments test modules and other off the shelf components for use in building complex test sets
- Fluent in the application Lean/Six Sigma in low volume/high mix manufacturing environments
- The ability to design, evaluate, and apply sound PCB and mechanical fabrication, assembly, and cleaning technics
- Experience with the assembly and manufacture of radiation detectors, high voltage PCB design, long term high vacuum systems, and electrically driven cryogenic coolers is a plus.
- Excellent Microsoft Office skills
- The ability to use CAD design software (preferably SolidWorks) to design test fixtures as needed
